Let’s learn how to tape a horse with difficult or painful cycles.

If we have a horse that has painful cycles, they may have pain in their lumbar spine because the ovaries and the uterus are located underneath the lumbar spine.

Strategy: Using Equine Kinesiology Tape for Pain Relief for Mares

  1. Use a 4-inch piece of kinesiology tape (equi-tape, KT tape, etc.)

  2. Split each end so you have an X-shape

  3. Make sure all of the tentacles of the tape are loose

  4. Remove the KT tape backing

  5. Place the tape in an X-fashion over the lumbar spine in front of the sacrum.

  6. Repeat on the other side

  7. Take one more 4 inch piece of tape and place it right on top of the sacrum for additional pain relief

If the mare needs more support or if they are sore in their muscles, you can cover the muscles in the back and in the hind end to support the horse.

The video below shows this method for taping a mare that has difficult or painful cycles and/or lumbar spine pain.
